10th August 2009

When I installed the latest Takeabreak Cam or webcam at Fox Glacier township I was blown away with the natural beauty of South Westland. The drive south from Greymouth was spectacular with views of the Southern Alps and rugged coastline. I was fortunate that the installation was very straight forward and I had time to do some of the beautiful short walks to view Fox Glacier.
The Glacier is moving forward from the result of global warming causing more moisture to fall as snow and being compressed to form the moving river of ice. Very spectacular.

Takeabreak Cams

What is the weather like around New Zealand? The Takeabreak Cam is an ideal way to actually see live images updated every 10 minutes from various locations here in New Zealand.

At present we have 14 images from Russell, Paihia, Tauranga, Taupo,Nelson City, Nelson water front, Tasman Bay, Kaiteriteri, Punakaiki, Greymouth, Hanmer Springs, Kaikoura, Fox Glacier and Mount Cook. After buying the best webcam available and installing it at Hanmer Springs we were disappointed that the image was not crisp and clear. We then developed our own Takeabreak Cam that was auto focus, produced a clean image and could be tweeked remotely.
The Takeabreak Cam only requires a network cable connection as it has POE which makes it very simple to setup and connect to the internet.
My Main reason in setting up this Blogg is to start a forum for improving the standard of Webcams and helping people understand where they can be used to promote businesses and New Zealand as a tourism destination.
We all have our favourite spots here in New Zealand where we want to know the conditions. i.e. Is it snowing, what are the sea conditions and is it really like you hear from a news item.
We have had numerous occasions where visitors to NZ, on returning home, have found a Takeabreak Cam where they can check out the view of an area they visited and have decided to move to NZ after a few months. We are constantly reminded by E-mail if a takeabreak Cam is down. In all cases the problem has turned out to be as simple as the modem needed resetting.
